WinCo Issues Recall Of Beef Products In Light Of E. Coli Contamination
WinCo Foods, a supermarket chain with stores in several cities of the western United States, has issued a recall last week on beef purchased from its stores between March 28 and April 9.
WinCo food issued the recall after two samples of ground beef from WinCo's Modesto store in California tested positive for E. coli 0157:H7, a bacteria strain, which can cause abdominal cramping, vomiting and diarrheal illness.
The company said that no illnesses have been confirmed so far. "People with severe infections may be hospitalized, suffer kidney damage and possibly die from the bacteria,” said the director of California Department of Public Health Mark Horton. "Those most at risk for serious complications include young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems," added Harton.
Talking to reporters, a WinCo official said that the recall has been issued to fresh ground beef from WinCo Foods stores packed in plastic foam trays and sold between the above mentioned dates.
WinCo, which has 71 stores, added that the recall was on the advice of the California Department of Public Health.
