Crowds gathered at the State capitol bell tower to honour those who were massacred Virginia Tech three years ago. 32 people were killed on this day three years ago. The ceremony was led in Richmond by Gov. Bob Mc Donnell who declared that the state would observe 16th April every year as Virginia Tech Remembrance day during the four years of his tenure.
The governor read out the names of student and faculty who were shot and killed by student Seung Hui Cho on April 16, 2007. Molly Pearl, who was a freshman at the time of the shootout recalled to The Washington Post ,” People in my class tried to jump out of windows.". She was fortunate enough to have slept and hence missed the class. "What would I have done? I would have stood there, frozen. If I had gone to class I would have been shot. I probably would have been killed."
This year’s ceremony was more muted due to the fact that many of the students who were freshers that year will be graduating this year. This group of students call themselves the “4/16 generation.”
The post reported that classes are cancelled today and that there are events throughout the day to honour those who died that fateful day.
