Valve Launches Steam Mac Client
Online gaming company Valve today released its online video game portal, Steam, for the Mac clients.
The Steam application for Mac is available as a free download on the Steam website. The new portal is only compatible with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8, Snow Leopard 10.6.3 or later operating systems.
Valve was conducting test of the gaming portal in beta and the screenshots of the beta version were leaked on the web last month. Currently only 64 games are available for the Mac platform, but Valve announced that it will add new titles every Wednesday for some months. The Steam Play also comes with all the games, which are available for Mac. It means that players will be able to use their saved game data whether they switch to playing on a PC or Mac.
Valve had first announced the Steam for Mac platform in March. At that time, company's business development head Jason Holtman had said, "Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge.”
The new portal will open new business opportunities for Valve and Valve can also bring over its PC based game developing clients to the Mac platform using Steamworks.
