San Jose Sharks defeated Detroit Red Wings 2-1 yesterday in Game 5 of their second-round series to send two-time defending Western Conference champions out of the title race.

Patrick Marleau scored the tiebreaking goal 6:59 into the third period to shatter Red Wings’ dream.

Joe Thornton opened the scoring for San Jose and then set up Marleau's tally to help the Sharks defeat Detroit 4-1 in the series and reach the conference final only for the second time.

Red Wings goalie Evgeni Nabokov was tested several times in the second period but he survived the Detroit attack to keep the score leveled at 1. Marleau then received a pass from Thornton and beat Detroit’s custodian Jimmy Howard to make it 2-1 in Sharks favor.

Marleau had also netted one goal in Game 3. The duo were under intense pressure to perform and their good show in crucial matches must take the pressure off their shoulder.
