Rehoboth Boy Dies A Day After Being Beaten by Mother
According to the office of Bristol District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter, the 2-year-old Rehoboth boy, who had been allegedly beaten by his mother, has died in Hasbro Children's Hospital in Rhode Island.
While the toddler breathed his last on Friday morning, his mother Kim Peno, who is the accused, has pleaded not guilty.
38-year-old Kim Peno has been charged with battery and assault of a child “causing substantial injury,” though she has denied having beaten up the 2-year-old. She is being held without bail on charges of assault in Taunton District Court pending a competency evaluation.
Talking to WCVB-TV, Peno’s attorney Robert Sinsheimer said that his client had a history of mental health issues and added, “We will look into this case with the possibility there are mental health issues. She's grieving her child."
The police have said that the toddler's father had approached the nearby Seekonk police headquarters just after midnight on Thursday seeking assistance for his son, who he said had suffered head and torso injuries.
