Five grenade blasts near anti government protestors lead to the Thai prime minister to call for an emergency meeting on Thursday. The explosion occurred near Silom Road at the Thai capital which resulted in injuries ranging from 13 – 30. Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayakornn said that top military leaders and emergency officials are supposed to meet the prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
Center for Resolutions under Emergency Situation’s spokesman Col. Sansern Kaewkumnerd, said that Red shorts, the anti government protestors had gathered near a train station where the explosion happened.
As per reports, 13 people are reported to be injured. However Erawan Emergency and Rescue Center has reported a total injury count of 30 people.
Bangkok has witnessed skirmishes between the government forces and the anti government protestors for the past few weeks. The Red Shirts are supporters of the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin was voted out of power in 2006 without any bloodshed. The anti government protestors have been demanding the dissolution of the government and holding of fresh elections.
The parliament was stormed by these protestors on the 7th of April which led to the prime minister declaring a state of emergency which was done to “restore peace and order and to stop the spreading of false information to the Thai public."
