Polls Imminent after Poland President’s Sad Demise
Poland’s acting President Bromislaw Komorowski has assured quick elections to help the Nation recover from the uncertainty arising from the death of its President Leck Kaczynski.
Recently, Russian built Tupolev aircraft went down near Smolenk airport due to low visibility, killing the President Kaczynski and all 96 people on board.
As the country is mourning, Komorowski is left with a difficult job of unifying the Nation and leading it to an early Presidential election, otherwise supposed to be held in October. Pre-crash opinion polls have shown Bromislaw Komorowski trouncing Kaczynski. But now after his death, sympathy votes may lead to election win for twin brother Jaroslaw. Komorowski is, however, quoted saying “The election date must be set. This must be done as soon as possible to shorten the period in which Poland is in a period of uncertainty”.
Meanwhile, the coffin of Maria, President’s wife, was received at Warsaw airport with the same procession as the President’s body last Sunday. The couple’s state funeral will be held this weekend along with a memorial service for the others killed. The ceremony will be attended by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and heads of other States.
