Prague: On Thursday, in a ceremony hosted by the Czechs, President Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a new arms reduction pact taking another step in the direction of a world without nuclear weapons.
The pact aims to lessen the stockpile of deployed, strategic nuclear weapons in both countries and to get commitment from both nations to new procedures to check which weapons each country has.
President Obama reached the city of Prague Thursday morning. He met with the Russian President in private for about an hour before signing the treaty. The full document will be made available on the internet later today, as told by US officials.
The treaty is being called New Start and it puts new limits on the ready-to-use, long range nuclear weapons and is committed to reduce the nuclear arsenals of both the countries. As per the pact, both countries can have maximum of 1,550 ready to use, long-range nuclear weapons in addition to the other parts of their nuclear stockpile.
