Northeast Battered by Storm, Tries to Recover
The Northeast is facing nature’s wrath, which began with blizzards and has now taken the form of torrential rains. There is inundation everywhere.
Amid the deluge, the worst sufferers are the commuters, who find their ways blocked by water. The gushing winds and heavy rains have uprooted trees, which have blocked roads, severed electricity lines, and flooded rivers, adding to the misery of the people.
New Jersey has been the worst affected, with the state governor declaring a state of emergency. The storm has killed about seven people and left many others injured. Severed power lines have affected electricity supply to hundreds of thousands of homes and offices. Public Service Electric & Gas says about 72,000 customers have been affected and remain in dark.
Allan Dury, Con Edison’s spokesperson, talking to CBS station WCBS-TV, said the agency was working at full capacity to restore power supply on Long Island and Westchester. The storm has impacted the airlines severely, which had to cancel a number of scheduled flights, leaving a number of people stranded.
Gushing storms have forced many to dissert their homes to go to safer places. The New York Police Department has been repeatedly receiving emergency calls from people seeking help. A woman was reportedly killed New Jersey and another one in Greenwich died when a tree struck her on the road. Many other deaths have been reported from different areas.
