Movie Reviews: The Back-up Plan Review, Plan That Failed
When JLO and hunky Alex O’Loughlin get together to hatch ‘The Back-up Plan’, little do they realize that it will turn out to be a disaster.
Jennifer Lopez playing Zoe, a successful pet shop owner in Manhattan, decides to have a baby and thus goes for artificial insemination. Just after, she has a chance meeting with the goat farmer Stan (Alex), and the two end up falling in love.
As the relationship progresses, they discover that Zoe is pregnant with twins, and Stan, like a loving partner, takes up the charge of caring for the mother-to-be. Time passes and circumstances lead them to separation. But in the end, they get together to give the film a happy ending.
Lopez tries hard to deliver an impressive stint, but it gets lost somewhere in the weak script. Alex’s acting is flat and accent too Australian. The inclusion of friends (Michaela Watkins and Eric Olsen), a crazy grandmother (Linda Lavin), and single mothers’ group, helps the screenplay of Kate Angelo minimally.
The Back-up Plan is quite monotonous, with no strong storyline and mediocre performances. Alan Poul’s direction fails to make a mark. Even the nitty gritty of pregnancy – the morning sickness, pangs of desire, mood swings, bickering and craving, and the love between the characters, fail to bind the audience. In short, the film lacks a mass appeal and is shoddy.
