Moscow Metro Explosions Kill At Least 37, Dozens Injured
At least 37 people have died and dozens wounded in two explosions that rocked the busy Moscow metro during rush hour Monday morning.
It is not yet confirmed if the source of blasts are suicide bombers but UK's Telegraph quotes security sources as indicating that suspected suicide bombers from the North Caucasus region which includes Chechnya could be responsible.
If that is true then this Moscow bombing is the first instance of them targeting Moscow metro after 2004.
A Moscow Emergency Ministry spokeswoman said 22 people died in the first blast, at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow. This particular station is located below the main offices of the Federal Security Service, which is KGB's main successor agency.
The first Moscow Metro explosion occurred within a carriage as the train was coming into the station. The blast reportedly killed some passengers on the train as well as some people on the platform. At least 17 were reported injured.
The second Moscow subway explosion occurred soon after that at the busy Park Kultyry metro station which is near Moscow’s famous Gorky Park. At least 12 people were initially reported dead there.
Security experts say that Islamist rebels mostly targeted the North Caucasus area which have been trying to control. But this attack after the last November bombing of passenger train between Moscow and St. Petersburg killing dozens, clearly points that the rebels are trying to widen their net to include big cities too.
In previous months Russian security forces have claimed having killed many important militants. It seems that the rebels are striking back through the Moscow metro explosion as was expressed then by Russian politicians, to show that the rebels still are capable of causing huge damage.
