Mexico Earthquake Kills 2, Over 100 Injured in Mexicali City
Two people died and over 100 were injured in Mexico in a 7.2 magnitude earthquake which struck northwest Mexico's Baja California state on Sunday.
U.S. Geological Survey says that the Baja earthquake struck at 3:40 p.m. (6:40 p.m. ET) about 110 miles east-southeast of Tijuana, Mexico. The Mexican earthquake shook Arizona and southern California.
First person was killed in Mexicali, Mexico in a building collapse and the other person was killed while running from his house into the street and hit by a car, reports CNN.
Over 100 people were being treated at local hospitals in Mexico. The whole city of Mexicali has lost electricity after the quake.
Meanwhile there have been no reports of any deaths or injuries in California and Arizona.
It was the biggest earthquake in the Baja California area since 1992.
The 1992 earthquake, which struck in Landers, California, led to an earthquake the next day in Nevada and another earthquake 11 days later in Southern California, reports CNN. Both were 5.7 magnitude earthquakes.
In the present earthquake, there have been three large aftershocks so far, one of them was of 5.5 magnitude,as reported by USGS.
In just a few minutes after the Mexico earthquake, a magnitude 4.1 quake struck Santa Rosa, north of San Francisco. There was no damage but it was a separate quake from the one that occurred in the Baja California desert as per USGS.
