Former Tennis star Martina Navratilova whose name is synonymous with fitness is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Navratilova, 53, made the announcement on Wednesday on Good Morning America.

The cancer in her left breast, diagnosed as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), was first detected during a mammogram in early January.

Good news is that DCIS is the most common type of non-invasive breast cancer and is mostly referred to as Stage 0 or precancer.

USA Today reports that Martina Navratilova said she first thought of keeping the news quiet but changed her mind when she thought of other women who might face a direr situation by skipping a routine mammogram.
