Republican candidate Marco Rubio received support from former vice president Dick Cheney in his race to the US Florida Senate. The former vice president was also critical of Governor Charlie Crist, who is competing against Rubio for the Senate position.
Crist has been steadily losing support as favourite Rubio gains more ground before the primary on 31st August. This has also led to the governor in two minds on whether to fight as an independent candidate.
A statement from Rubio’s campaign team has said that Cheney has criticized Crist has “ime and again that he cannot be trusted in Washington to take on the Obama agenda because on issue after issue he actually supports that agenda."
"Lately it seems Charlie Crist cannot be trusted even to remain a Republican. I strongly urge him to either stay in the Republican primary or drop out of the race. The only winners from an independent bid by Crist would be (President) Barack Obama and (Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid," Cheney said.
Rubios lead over Crist is at 57% as against 28%. However, till some time back Crist was a front runner for the Republican nomination who was to take on democratic nominee Kendrick Meek.
Out of the 100 seats of the Senate more than one third are going for November congressional elections.
