Johan Franzen Sets Red Wings Playoff Record With 6 Points Against Sharks
Johan Franzen has entered into the history books of the Detroit Red Wings playoff record by scoring six points and added one more record to his name by scoring four goals against the San Jose Sharks.
Franzen scored three goals in a 3:26 span of the first period and added the fourth beside his name in the third quarter. He added two assists also.
Previous record of five points was held jointly by Steve Yzerman and Norm Ullman. The mark of four goals was held by Carl Liscombe, who had made the record in 1945. Liscombe’s record was matched by Ted Lindsay in 1955.
Joffrey Lupul of Anaheim was the last player to score four goals in a playoff game in 2006. Lupul has created the record against Colorado. Detroit, facing elimination, led 5-0 after the opening frame and were leading 7-1 in the third period after Franzen scored his fourth goal.
San Jose coach Todd McLellan hailed Franzen saying, “Some players just seem bigger in the playoffs, and Franzen is one of them. I mean that literally. He looks taller, broader, bigger in every way. He's a huge man, That's why they call him the Mule."
