Google Announces Plans To Launch ebookstore Google Editions This Year
Google today announced plans to launch its own digital bookstore called Google Editions.
A Google spokesperson confirmed that the store will open in late June or July. Google Editions, web-based effort will let the users buy and use their books wherever they want.
Chris Palma, Google's strategic partner development manager first broke the news regarding the launch of Google Editions. Earlier, The Wall Street Journal had reported that Palma revealed the timetable of the Google Editions during a talk at Random House's New York offices this week. The session was called "The Book on Google: Is the Future of Publishing in the Cloud?" and the title itself speaks a lot about Google's plan to bring a revolutionary change in the digital book industry.
Unlike its e-book-selling competitors including Amazon's Kindle; Barnes and Noble's Nook; and Apple's iBooks, Google Editions will allow the users to download and read their favorite books using only the Web browser. That means the users can use this new feature using any device that can surf the web like laptop, computer and even Kindle, Nook, or iPad.
Though Google is yet to reveal details about its new application, experts are optimistic that Google Editions will not change the reading experience only but it will also bring major changes in the purchasing experience. "It's much more of an open ecosystem, where you find a way for bricks-and-mortar stores to participate in the future digital world of books," said Google engineer Dan Clancy.
