Police have confirmed that former supermodel Viveka Babajee has committed suicide by hanging herself at her Mumbai, India home. The confirmation was made after an autopsy report. "The post-mortem report has confirmed that she committed suicide by hanging herself. We are still investigating the motives which could have led her to take the extreme step," additional police commissioner (west) Amitabh Gupta told IANS.
Gupta said that the friends, associates and neighbors of the 37-year-old model were being questioned to unravel the mystery behind Babajee’s suicide. "We are confident of getting at the truth very soon," he said. Viveka’s neighbors had informed the police about her death after finding her hanging from the ceiling fan of her living room.
Babajee became famous in the mid-1990s with her Kamasutra condom ads. People connected with Indian fashion industry said that Viveka was in a state of depression after allegedly breaking up with her boyfriend recently. Police have seized her mobile phone, a laptop, a diary and other articles, in order to get some clues from these items.
Babajee was a Miss Universe contestant in 1994 and she had walked the ramp for several years in Mumbai and Delhi. She had also choreographed fashion shows in Dubai and Muscat.
Babajee also acted in a Bollywood moviet, but the movie failed and she returned to modeling full time. Her friend, fashion designer Rohit Verma, said that he was planning to commission her for a fashion assignment next month.
