Ex-LA Police Chief Daryl F Gates Dead At 83
Former L.A. police chief Daryl F Gates is no more. He was 83.
In a statement from the Police department it was learnt that the police chief during the city’s deadly riots of 1992 has died on Friday at his Newport Beach home with his family by his side. The former police chief was suffering from bladder cancer and was hospitalized.
Gates was well liked by both his colleagues, peers and seniors but was known for his short fuse and controversial statements though his 14 year tenure ended amidst criticism of the fact that four white officers were acquitted of most of the charges of beating Rodney King.
He was however also responsible for many police department successes as well which were dwarfed in front of the riot accusations.
