Ernie Harwell Dies Of Cancer, Mourned By Fans
Ernie Harwell died of cancer on Tuesday night. He was 92. Ernie was known for his wonderful voice and the ability to make people feel at home. That is why everybody was always looking forward to hear him.
Harwell started doing broadcasting in 1943 and had been always adored throughout his professional life. He always had his own fixed slot but one always wanted him to talk about his own experiences.
After his initial few years, he joined the Marines. He holds the distinction of being the only announcer to be acquired in a trade. As a person he never shouted and only used country phrases which were a part of his upbringing. Very often readers would send across poems to him and he would gracefully support the same.
He had a habit of composing his column on a typewriter and then would fax it or drop it at the office. His career spanned multiple roles like Sprots reporter, copy editor etc. His other interest lay in writing songs.
Post Mike Ilitch’s buying the Tigers, one of the first things that Mike did was to get Ernie back. It seems like Ernie had a premonition of his death as he had shared with lots of people of Michigan about the fact that he was dying.
After his death there has been a surge in demand for Ernie Harwell audio clips and quotes as if fans want to keep him alive with his voice.
