The 5-inch Dell Streak tablet is not going on sale by July end reports Computerworld.com quoting a company spokesman late Tuesday. Earlier in the day Dell had posted an online message on its Web site mistakenly that customers could return to the site Wednesday to buy the device.
The message led to anticipation that the online sales of the Dell Streak wireless tablet could begin from Wednesday. The tablet will operate on the AT&T network, according to Dell Web posts. While some bloggers noticed on the Dell Web site that the online sales of the tablet would begin Wednesday, another site, AndroidPolice, mentioned it would start Friday. However, neither Dell nor AT&T commented on the sales plan earlier.
According to Chief Dell Blogger Lionel Menchaca, the tablet will not operate on T-Mobile, but on AT&T as it is the only other U.S. carrier after T-Mobile with GSM coverage. The device will reportedly come with a 5-inch screen and will be shipped with Android 1.6. An over-the-air update to Android 2.2 will come later in the year, according to Menchaca. Dell streak will initially be offered in carbon black, Menchaca said.
The tablet was first launched in June in the UK. Costing 149 British pounds (about $231 U.S), Dell Streak version in the UK runs on Telefonica O2 UK's wireless network at a monthly cost of 25 pounds (about $39 U.S.) for a two-year contract. The UK version of Dell Streak weighed 220 grams, or about 7.8 ounces, and the size is 153 x 79 x 10 mm or 6 x 3.1 x .4 inches. However, there has been no mention of the price of US version of Dell Streak.
Amid growing concerns about the Dell Streak sounding as a Mobile Internet Device and its screen being half the size of rival iPad, Menchaca mentions that the pre-sales for the Streak indicates "there's a lot of you out there in the United States and beyond who are excited about the device. You've made Dell Streak the most successful pre-sale we've ever offered. In my 16 years at Dell, I've not seen (or heard) this level of buzz around a Dell product."
