Decline in Newspaper Sales Continues
The six months ending March 31st shows a continued fall in the circulation volumes for US newspapers as per an audit report issued on Monday.
A number of reasons were reported by The Atlanta Journal Constitution which said it reported sharp fall in sales.
As per the Audit Bureau of circulation the fall of daily circulation was at about 8.7% against a year on year for the same period. Sales of Sunday also dropped by 6.5%
The dismal fall in sales is a direct consequence of several business decisions taken in 2009.The AJC reported a drop in the presence of counties from 45 to 20. Also, the price of the single copy has been raised from 75 p to $1
“The circulation numbers don’t come as a surprise,” AJC Publisher Michael Joseph said in a statement. “They reflect some strategic moves we knew would impact volume. These decisions also allowed us to return to profitability.”
With the return of the paper to profitability the numbers are also expected to rise whose movement is to be seen in the next audit statement in September.
“We’re also focused on improving the newspaper and listening to readers,” he said. “We’ve created our largest investigative reporting team that has broken several major stories and recently added news content in our main A section.”
Majority of the newspapers showed a decline in circulation though the dip in the industry wide circulation was lower than last year.
