A different kind of award was given in New York on Saturday night. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation’s media awards presented Joy Behar and Cynthia Nixon honorary awards for their contribution in the field of media.
Ms. Behar, a host of “The View” on ABC and “The Joy Behar Show” on the HLN network, bagged the top honors for excellence in media. This award was given to her keeping in mind her exemplary contribution to the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Meanwhile, Vito Russo Award, given to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional was bagged by Ms. Nixon. ABC’s “Brothers and Sisters” bagged the award for outstanding drama series, while, Lifetime’s “Prayers for Bobby,” starring Sigourney Weaver and Ryan Kelley won the award for outstanding television movie or mini-series.
Colman Domingo’s “Boy and His Soul,” won an award for Broadway and Off Broadway Theater. The New York Times won for their out standing newspaper coverage, which also included awards and prizes for writers like Frank Rich, Tara Parker-Pope and Benoit Denizet-Lewis.
