Analysts said yesterday that microchips giant Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is trying to build momentum for its laptop chips in order to consolidate its position in the market and move ahead of rival Intel in terms of business.
While holding discussions over the first quarter, AMD's CEO, Dirk Meyer, said he saw "the notebook market as a big opportunity ... because we are relatively under-represented there." Meyer noted that AMD was doing good business, with a market share in the "high 20s." He, however, admitted that AMD's share in the laptop arena is not as much as in the microchip sector, and called for more efforts to boost AMD’s presence in the laptop arena also.
Meyer announced that AMD is developing more power-efficient processors to improve the battery life of its laptop. AMD has also improved graphics capabilities in its laptop, noted Meyer.
The AMD boss said that the company will launch its Bobcat chip microarchitecture next year. The Bobcat products will be used for thin laptops to fit into new markets like "pads" or tablet computers.
