The 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament, which will culminate today, has proved an astounding success not only as a sporting event but as a socio-cultural event as well. Today, the tournament will end after 31 days of sheer excitement and South Africans will start the cleaning up.
The African diaspora in Canada was also affected by the FIFA fever as the Africans, who were living a relative unrecognizable life so far are now getting recognition. Africans have always wanted that the global community should identify them and their nations with something more positive than the wars, disease, hunger and political corruption and the World Cup has done just that.
South Africa has hosted the mega-event superbly without any flaw and the performance of the Ghanaian national team, which reached the quarterfinals, has definitely given moments of happiness to the Africans across the globe.
Talking about the African diaspora in Canada they are now getting enough recognition and the Canadians are now seen talking positive things about the Dark Continent. “We are being seen in a new light,” says Ndaba Njobo of Zimbabwe. The successful hosting of the World Cup has proved that the Africans are capable of accepting their responsibilities in the modern world and they have the potential to come up with something positive and extraordinary.
